You know, that is an interesting point. @why-animals-do-the-thing I know you already commented on the fact that this lioness is also defending her cubs given male lions will commit infanticide to bring females back into estrus (adding the full bit in case my followers didn’t see - I forget if I reblogged it earlier). But… I don’t think I’ve ever seen a lion with a mane that makes him look like he’s going bald before. Any idea if there’s something specific that causes this?

not the person you were tagging but! I’d guess the lion is actually pretty young!! still growing in his mane. the article explains the scene took place on a conservancy, and the lions there tend to split from their pride to create their own much younger than in other areas
